Beginner's Guide: Configuring a Gaming Desktop
Are you considering configuring a gaming desktop computer, but does all the technicality involved have you some what confused? Worry not, as this article has a guided solution for you. A computer is only a machine and when its associated with gaming, the only difference is the performance based around its components. With this being said, below, section to section, is a guide to begin building your own machine based off your preferences!
To begin selecting these components, the core pieces of hardware relating to gaming begin with the central processing unit, video card, and motherboard. We will start here and build from there.
Video Card
The graphic card is the component that employs the purpose in your gaming rig. It endeavors through countless hours of graphic processing when you play your favorite games, but also displays precise, sharp images when your computer is operating. The characteristics you should look for are simple. They start with:
- The type of processor dedicated to each individual video card and their core clock speed.
- Next, consider using a system of graphic cards that can be linked together through SLI or Crossfire technology. Just check to see if the card you select is compatible will either technology, to ensure benefits for the future.
- After this, investigate the bus interface, I'd recommend PCIe because its the best choice for current video cards. Another format is known as AGP, but most video cards that use this connection source are becoming out-of-date.
- Also, todays video cards have their own dedicated memory, similar to a processors memory cache, so consider the memory capacity, memory type, and clock speed/bandwidth.
- Lastly, your going to need some sort of display to connect your computer to. There are many options available, so check your output connection source.

Central Processing Unit
The central processing unit is the component that performs all the basic, yet sometimes complex conversions when you are gaming. A more sophisticated processor is required when playing intense games and other multimedia applications. When selecting a processor, look for these characteristics:
- First, the cpu must be matched with a suitable socket that is connected to the motherboard. After verifying that the processor is compatible with the motherboard, do not forget to check the socket type.
- Check the core clock speed of the processor, whether it contains more than one core or not. Also, just like a video card, processor also have their own version of dedicated memory. Look into the memory capacity and check its L1, L2, or L3 cache capacity, though not all levels of memory are suited with a generous amount.
- Next, look into the processors FSB or Front Side Bus because this carries data between the cpu and northbridge, which delegates communications.
-Since gaming is priority, invest in an appropriate heat sync or other cooling device to ensure your cpu operates at a decent temperature.
-Also, if in fact you buy a fan to cool your processor or its supplied with the heat sync, make sure the power connection source for your selected CPU fan will be compatible with the motherboard.
